1.
I remember when you prayed for me And you said you saw a black hole Well, yes, my feet have been in quicksand And there’s a vacuum in my soul But I’m not done yet I’m not done yet There’s things that maybe I regret But I’m not done yet Time is like a butterfly That you can see but never catch And it feels like I’ve spent the better part Not doing very much But I’m not done yet I’m not done yet There are things that I would rather forget But I’m not done yet Bridge: I don’t think it’d do much Just to dwell On my weaknesses And my own private hells Cause I’m not done yet I’m not done yet…
2.
There’s a person in our person There’s a voice in our chest That wants to lament the worst and That wants to believe the best That wants to put flags on mountains To swim to the depths of our tears And get the feelings inside of us Into someone else’s ears Your song is like no one other Your melody unique And it could be just the thing Some hungry soul seeks Try not to critique it Let your voice be heard Make exquisite music Craft prismatic words With the time we’re given Which isn’t a whole lot Take in everything with wonder And then give what you’ve got
3.
You take so much And give so little You don’t know how to play Second fiddle All you do is make demands But you never lend a helping hand Like pennies are not worth The price of minting Like a printer that never has ink For its printing To me it doesn’t make sense I’m sorry, you’re friendship’s Not worth the expense You’ve made promises before But when I come knocking You don’t answer the door You’re basically full of hot air And I’m beginning To think it’s not fair I hope I’m not that kinda friend
4.
All around us is crumbling The news is never good The nation is divided And the forest, firewood But I’m not gonna break No, I’ve learned how to cope When everything’s unfortunate I’ll still hold on hope I’ve got the eyes of the dove Only for my love Like angels from above I’ve got the eyes of the dove When people say that it’s the end I know that it’s the start When they all say that it’s doomsday I listen to my heart I’ve got the eyes of the dove Only for my love Like angels from above I’ve got the eyes of the dove Bridge: There has been so much That we’ve been through And I find that I can always count on you
5.
Can’t enter the kingdom of God Unless you become like a kid Maybe heaven is like swings and like slides Something fun like a jungle gym Swinging with monkeys Like Tarzan No more Nazis Or Ku Klux Klan A place we can visit our loved ones Whenever A place we can be Forever clever Where trials are turned into only adventures And our lonely hours Become eons Together Because ideally sighs lead To a comforting hand And there’s a place where we Don’t misuse the land If we could imagine what The next world could allow We could bring some of heaven To here and to now
6.
Leech 01:07
You’re slowing me down I’ve got bigger dreams Success is not As easy at it seems You’re always such A leech on my time With your insecurities And your unstable mind If you’d just believe in yourself Without always needing Someone else To give you shots of dopamine Fill up your car with gasoline You feel like you’re so poor and inept And need someone who’s more adept To validate you so you try To be the apple in someone’s eye But you forget the strength inside So you take me for this tiresome ride You’re fogging up You need to see clearer I said To the man in the mirror
7.
If you want your heart to remain whole Hide it in a box, bury it in a hole If you don’t want your heart to break You’ll never know just what it takes To be the target for Cupid’s darts To make of all the broken parts An affectionate Pangea To wrap life up in a warm tortilla Because sorrow is the glue of joy The emotional soul most songs employ Like sports or stocks or crops or weather Like the wind that blows an owl’s feather There’s no triumph without drama No baby without an attentive mamma Because after you experience pain You can know the feeling of getting up again So don’t be scared of love’s turmoil To be buried sometimes in the soil There’s no honor and there’s no glory Without a complicated story
8.
I feel a breath on my neck And I’m convinced that you’re standing behind me This would be the first time I’ve seen you in an eternity You know I’ve been thinking about you So maybe you came for a visit But I have never seen a ghost before It isn’t possible, is it? Of all the deceased I’d want to see most You are the top of the list Of all of the voices, the touches, the smiles Yours is the greatest I’ve missed But when I turn around nobody is there Have I got my hopes up for nothing? Is it just some deceiving wind Or somehow your fingertips brushing? I have so much to tell you So much I haven’t gotten to say I hope in some afterlife, I’ll see you But it would be so much better today Of all the deceased I’d want to see most You are the top of the list Of all of the voices, the touches, the smiles Yours is the greatest I’ve missed I guess I’ll just have to wait longer To see if there’s some kind of reunion And in the mean time bear the burden Of what it means to be human
9.
Where are the dreamers Who care about the lemurs? Where the providers Who look after the spiders? We wouldn’t let our towns Be pillaged and burned down Without some kind of a fight To suffer such a sleight Just like a lonely boy Who’s in desperate need of friends The rainforest Is asking us, “Whom will you send?” Without a soul who really cares Who sees the need Who takes the dare So many species Might just see their end Where are the voices Telling us there’re choices? Where are the hands Giving back to the land? Mother Earth is asking Us just who will profit? What’s the price she will pay For us to fill our pockets? Just like a child Who needs nurture And protection The world is asking For someone with direction Who’s willing to give Her heart, her time Who sees the mountains We must climb Who approaches the earth And its wildlife with affection
10.
Oh Mary 02:12
Oh Mary Whose love has been withheld Oh Mary Whose orchard has been felled Come to my open arms A love so much deeper Than illusory charms A place that’s safe from The world’s harms Come to my open arms Oh Mary Who’s been misunderstood Oh Mary Who’s been labeled no good Come share my everlasting life Come be my friend Come be my wife Escape the sharpened hunter’s knife Come share my everlasting life I’ve loved you like an apple I’ve loved you like the eve Though the world has become a forest on fire Come to me and let’s grieve Oh Mary Who’s as bright as a diamond Oh Mary Who’s as lonely as an island Come to me and we can talk We’ll kiss, embrace We’ll sing and walk Though enemies whisper and they stalk Come to me and we can talk
11.
Whatever happened to Playing just for sport? In the eyes of a child There’s no difference Between diamonds And quartz To hold a piece of the earth In your good hand And send it skipping Across the water With your bare feet in the sand Cause there’s no millionaires Professionals or fakes When you’re playing an honest game Of Ducks and Drakes Some things have no price They’re just for goodness’ sakes A gift that’s free like the air Forests, mountains, lakes Cause when you try to commodify The simplest of things Incentivize with 7 figures And championship rings You may lose the joy and peace Of just playing the game The beauty of a heart on fire Instead of an avaricious flame
12.
Peace In War 01:17
There must be a system We can get behind There must be some way For us to unwind Macro and micro We live in both worlds Like it or not Our flags are unfurled We’re going to freedom From slavery We’ll be rewarded for our bravery The arc of the universe Bends towards justice But in the meantime Please be at peace At peace At peace Like a statue that takes time to shape Like wine that’s aged from the grape Know that your work’s not in vain Let your love and your hope Carry the strain

about

Skeleton Keys started out as what I'd like to call a "charity challenge." I offered to write personalized songs for friends about a topic of their choice if they gave to the charity of their choosing. I was able to get twelve friends to collaborate (Tristan, Chrissie, Tanner, Ronya, Sarah, Jason, Nylah, Milo, Valerie, Denise, Sam, and Shannon). I love writing personalized stuff, a way to create meaning for both myself and the person that I'm writing for. So the album has a lot of dynamics, I think. But the songs all fit well together and have similar production. I'm so thankful to Tristan Heles for the mixing and mastering, a first for both of us. All of the proceeds for the album will go to the charity MusiCares, which helps musicians in need, especially pertinent considering how the pandemic has affected musicians. These are all "Skeleton Keys", that might open your mind and heart to some semblance of hope and empowerment, as dark and as hard as life can get. Thanks for joining me and us on this ride!

THE TOPICS I RECEIVED FOR EACH SONG:

"I'm Not A Blackhole" - write a punk song

"Exquisite Music" - something inspiring about songwriting

"Not Worth The Expense" - "pennies are not worth the price of minting"

"Eyes Of The Dove" - the verse from Song of Solomon

"Forever Clever" - hope

"Leech" - write a song where you realize the writer is saying something in the mirror by the end

"Love's Turmoil" - heartbreak

"Top Of The List" - write a song about feeling a chill on the back of your neck

"Whom Will We Send" - write a song about I.F.R.O.G.S., a company that specializes in helping study and conserve the rainforest and its wildlife

"Oh Mary" - write a song about Mary Magdelene

"Ducks and Drakes" - based on a novel about what would happen if skipping stones were made into a professional sport

"Peace In War" - looking for rest when struggling with working hard towards important goals
