He came as a dove He came as a lamb But his culmination Was coming as a man He could have come As an electric storm Destroying everything in sight But it wasn’t his opinion That might always makes right He could have come as an alien Blowing all our minds But it wasn’t in his plans To be something we couldn’t find CH He could’ve come as an angel Not bound by the laws of nature But it was a different way That he showed us he was greater He came as a baby It’s what we know of love Because the lowliest among us Still comes from above CH

If you’ve been in prison Look to Joseph If you’ve been in slavery Look to Moses If someone wants to take your life Look to Jesus Christ If you’ve lost it all Look to Job If you’ve betrayed a friend Look to Peter If you’re wondering If it’s worth the price Look to Jesus Christ Because evil doesn’t have The last word Though we all suffer at its hand Life might sometimes seem absurd But the Jews made it To the promised land If you’ve lost a child Look to Mary If you’re in the tomb Look to Lazarus If your life like Paul Is so hazardous Be like him And look to Jesus Christ If you suffer with temptation Look to Eve If you’re the victim of shame Look to Mary Magdalene If you’re just a lowly Nazarene Just like Jesus Christ Because evil doesn’t have The last word Though we all suffer at its hand Like the thief upon the cross Jesus is calling all of us To the promised land

History’s lined with the rich Kings, bourgeoisie, aristocrats If you were thinking Of making it to the top You’d have to be Some kind of acrobat Perhaps there’s something To be said For a meritocracy Though it’s not a good look The way the aristocracy Compounded the problems Of the poor Siphoned all of the resources And their riches stored Put all the opposition in jail And the majority of people Bitterly failed CH: And then along came Jesus The broken reed The pauper king Preached good news to the least Set up an upside down kingdom And changed everything Saying blessed are the impoverished That theirs is the kingdom of God Revealing so many rich men’s hearts As more rabid than a mangy dogs He built his kingdom Not on money But on charity and love And changed the power structure So that what was beneath Was really above CH

Sin demands a sacrifice A lamb without blemish But man often goes overboard Makes of violence a fetish The one who came To give his life Said he desires mercy Not sacrifice When Jesus ate with sinners The Pharisees thought it was uncouth But he wasn’t living in a sin He was living out the truth The one who came To give his life Said he desires mercy Not sacrifice Because loving Isn’t keeping all the rules And the ones who thought They knew the best Proved themselves to be The biggest fools The one who came To give his life Said he desires mercy Not sacrifice

Ponderosa pine Before we’ve been turned Into a fine wine We go through a sort of ringer Written on stone By God’s finger Mary didn’t have an easy path But she, like many women Was an empath Felt deeply the messages of God The angels and shepherds Her heart was awed And she was known to ponder While she was here Still over yonder She meditated on the Wonderful ways God has rearranged her days She didn’t know the road ahead But she trusted God instead Of fearing for her life Embraced the mystery In the midst of strife And her son became the savior Because she was so full of favor If you ever dismay or wonder Be like Mary and simply ponder
6.
Psalm 143 01:12
I am weary, Lord The enemy’s sword Is up against my throat My life is like a boat Tossed on the stormiest seas Help me ponder your decrees Meditate on your loving kindness Take this state of blindness And shine your everlasting light Prove that you are always right Because you save those Who trust in you The ones graft into The vine that bears all fruit I think upon your righteous truth And know my enemies Will be defeated And by God I will be greeted though for a time all is dark Jesus is the everlasting spark And all will be enflamed By his glorious name
7.
Ponder but don’t worry God is not in a hurry Ask for the Holy Spirit And be assured you’ll hear it When you’re brought before men Don’t worry what you will say But God himself Will touch your tongue And everything Will eventually be okay Ponder but don’t worry Walk a measured pace Don’t scurry Jesus has been here before And God knows The good things he has in store CH Share Jesus with people And the angels will adore you Walk the path ahead Jesus goes before you

about

It's become something of a tradition for me to write and record a Christmas album, every so often. This year, I wanted to do a sort of non-traditional Christmas album, (it's not all Fa-La-La-La-La or Oh Holy Night, to be sure,) around the idea of "pondering." It says in Luke, after Mary was visited by the shepherds and the angels, "She pondered all of these things in her heart." I believe the concept of pondering is so important in life: to wonder, to consider, to pause before the majesty of whatever holds our mind and heart's sway. The Bible is a complicated book, that can be used for good or ill, but I always tend to ponder it. In this album, therefore, I thought I would ponder God's choice to come to earth as a man ("The Culmination,") the problem of evil in scripture ("People To Look To"), God's preference for the poor ("An Upside Down Kingdom"), Jesus' emphasis on mercy in his ministry ("Mercy Not Sacrifice"), and then stories in the Bible that dealt with pondering, like Psalm 143, Luke 12, and the Mary story. My hope is that this Christmas season, you will be able to ponder the gifts you've been given, the upside down way of Christ, and the broken path that brings us to all different kinds of paradise. Merry Christmas! And take the time to ponder.
